According to reports, the apex court made the suggestion in the wake of the several pending cases before the courts seeking a halt to the release of the film, based on various factors. Reports state that Bhansali’s lawyer has said he will seek instructions from the filmmaker before the court continues the hearing tomorrow, February 24.
Should the director agree to the court’s suggestion, it will be Bhansali’s latest film to be subjected to a name change. He previously changed the titles of his films including ‘Goliyon Ka Raasleela Ram-Leela’ and ‘Padmaavat’.
Several cases have been filed in various courts, seeking to halt the release of the film based on the life of the Gangubai, who rose to political prominence in the of Kamathipura in Mumbai.
The film is adapted from Hussain Zaidi‘s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ and stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role.
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court dismissed three petitions filed seeking deletion of the words ‘Kamathipura’, ‘Kathiawadi’ and ‘China’ from the Hindi movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik was hearing two public interest litigations (PILs) – filed by city MLA Amin Patel and one Hiten Mehta – and another petition submitted by Shraddha Surve, a resident of the Kamathipura area in south Mumbai.
Babu Ravji Shah also filed a case against the filmmaker, alleging that the film is defamatory towards his mother. He has challenged an order from the Bombay High Court which refused to stay the release of the film.
Alia Bhatt told news agency ANI that the controversy about the film doesn’t faze her. “Neither any controversy nor any comment bothers me. I don’t think anything bothers me beyond a point. Of course, I feel like there’s a certain novelty that just a part of a film holds…whether the film is a good film or a bad film ..that doesn’t matter. The audience makes their final decision only after watching the film.. nothing that happens before or after can really change the fate,” she said.
